Eastern Band teaches teenagers how to manage gaming payment

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina shares gaming revenues with its members, including teenagers.

Starting this year, all teens will be required to undergo financial training to receive their per capita payment. “Cherokee is way ahead of the game,” Chief Michell Hicks told The Smoky Mountain News. “The Eastern Band stands out in front.”

Since 1995, every tribal member has received a share of gaming revenues. The tribe invests the money in a trust fund for minors, who get the money when they turn 18.

In 2010, the per capita payment was $7,347, the News reported.
